When our pup was just six months old, a routine vet visit for a stomach upset turned into our worst nightmare. We were looking for a swallowed toy; what we found instead was a death sentence. The scan revealed a severe genetic kidney deformity. One kidney was abnormally small and the other was deformed—a fragile, flickering light.

The vet’s words were a cold blur: “She likely won’t live beyond her first birthday.”

Heartbroken and seeking answers, we went back to the seller. Their response was a “one-for-one exchange.”

In that moment, the world stood still. To them, she was a transaction—a defective item to be replaced. But to us, she was a life. A mammal with a soul, a heartbeat, and a place in our family that was already carved deep. I looked at her and saw a child, not a product. We couldn’t help but wonder: If we give her back, who will hold her when she’s scared? Will she be left to fade away? Will she be put down?

My husband and I looked at each other and knew: We don’t give up on family. We chose fate over convenience. We chose her.
